Apples are one of the oldest cultivated fruits. Originating in Western Asia, they are said to have been brought to Europe by Alexander the Great. Apples are also one of the most cultivated fruits in the world. The options are endless as to what you can do with them. They show up in salads, desserts, pressed for cider and juice, fermented for hard cider and Apfelwein, distilled for Schnaps, cooked and preserved, roasted, and much much more. In the fall we use them in so many preparations, both sweet and savory. There is the classic Apfelstrudel, a flaky warm pastry filled with spiced apples and often served with a vanilla cream sauce or ice cream. Or try Apfelwein, a Hessian specialty of the Frankfurt region. Next time you roast some pork and sauerkraut, throw some sliced apples and potatoes in it and add some Apfelwein or some apple cider for a delicious and warming Autumn classic!
